The Death of Vasyl Stus

Recollections

On the night of September 3–4, 1985, the poet and human rights activist Vasyl Stus died in a punishment cell of “Institution VS-389/36” in the village of Kuchino, Chusovskoy District, Perm Oblast. At that time, I was in cell No. 20 of this “institution,” and I therefore consider it my civic and human duty to bear witness to the circumstances and causes of his death.
