DNIPROPETROVSK SPECIAL PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL

 323012.11.2006

The Dnipropetrovsk Special Psychiatric Hospital, opened in 1968, was one of several special psychiatric hospitals (SPH) in the USSR. Up to the end of the 1980s among its “patients” were more than 40 people from various Soviet republics whose only “illness” was their dissident thinking. Around half of these were people from Ukraine, including Leonid PLYUSHCH, Anatoly LUPYNIS, Mykola PLAKHOTNYUK, Josyp TERELYA and others.  The institution gained its notoriety due to the harsh “treatment” of political prisoners which became known thanks to the international campaign in support of Leonid PLYUSHCH which lasted almost two and a half years.
