These conferences were called in order to unite efforts in the struggle for democracy and national independence. The first conference was held in Tashkent from 11-12 April 1987, with 105 delegates from Moscow, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, largely political prisoners. Ukraine was represented by the Ukrainian Helsinki Group (V. CHORNOVIL). The second, also in Tashkent, was from 14-15 June 1987. A conference was held in Lviv on 12 June 1988, which was attended by representatives of initiative groups from Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Armenia and Ukraine. The next took place in Tbilisi, and then in April 1990 in Looda (Estonia).
